200mm HDPE Pipe Specifications: OD, SDR, PN and Wall Thickness Guide
When you ask for 200mm HDPE pipe, the first thing I want you to check is not the price. The first thing is whether 200mm is being used as outside diameter, nominal diameter, or a required inside diameter. If this point is unclear, the quotation, fittings and flow calculation can all move in the wrong direction.
I am writing this guide from the supplier side, but the purpose is not to sell you a pipe immediately. The purpose is to help you turn a simple size request into a specification that your engineer, purchasing team, contractor and supplier can all understand in the same way.
For water supply, irrigation, mining water transfer, municipal pipelines, industrial systems and other project work, a clear 200mm HDPE pipe specification usually protects you from three problems: wrong wall thickness, mismatched fittings and repeated quotation revisions.
200mm Is A Starting Point, Not A Complete Specification
A size such as 200mm tells us where the discussion starts. It does not tell us the pressure class, wall thickness, standard, pipe length, fitting type or document requirement. That is why two buyers can both ask for 200mm HDPE pipe and still need different products.
In many metric HDPE pressure pipe systems, 200mm normally refers to the outside diameter. But I do not want you to rely on habit only. Some drawings, tenders and local markets may use DN or inside diameter language, so the wording should be checked before purchase.
| What You See In The RFQ | What It May Mean | What To Confirm Before Ordering |
|---|---|---|
| 200mm HDPE pipe | Often outside diameter in metric HDPE pipe | Confirm OD, SDR/PN, standard and application |
| DN200 pipe | May be nominal size language | Check whether the project accepts 200mm OD pipe |
| 200mm ID required | Inside diameter requirement | Wall thickness and SDR become critical |
| 200mm water pipe | Application is known, but specification is still incomplete | Confirm potable water documents, pressure class and fittings |

OD, DN And ID: The First Check Before SDR Or PN
If the project drawing says OD 200mm, the supplier can match the pipe outside diameter directly. If it says DN200, we need to understand how the project authority defines that nominal size. If it gives a required inside diameter, the SDR selection becomes part of the hydraulic calculation, not just a purchasing option.
This is why I suggest you do not send only a short message such as ‘quote 200mm HDPE pipe’. A better first message is: ‘200mm OD HDPE pipe, application is potable water, please quote SDR or PN options according to the project standard.’ This small change can save several rounds of clarification.
How SDR Changes Wall Thickness And Inside Diameter
SDR is the ratio between outside diameter and wall thickness. For the same 200mm outside diameter, a lower SDR usually means a thicker wall and a smaller inside diameter. That affects pressure capacity, flow area, pipe weight and price.
This is the part many buyers overlook. A 200mm SDR11 pipe and a 200mm SDR17 pipe may look similar from a distance, but they are not the same product. The wall thickness, inside diameter, pressure class and material weight are different.
How PN Relates To Pressure Class
PN is a pressure class, but it should not be used alone. In real procurement, PN needs to be checked together with SDR or DR, material grade, standard, temperature, test pressure and the fittings used in the same pipeline.
If your project is a municipal water line, pump outlet, mining water pipeline or long-distance transfer line, please do not choose PN only by habit. Working pressure, surge pressure and test pressure should be reviewed before the order is confirmed.
200mm HDPE Pipe Specification Checklist
Before you ask any supplier for a final quotation, I suggest you prepare the following technical information. This checklist is not paperwork for paperwork’s sake. It is the information that decides whether the pipe can actually match your project.
| Specification Item | What You Should Send | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Water, irrigation, mining, industrial transfer, drainage under pressure, or another use | Different applications may require different pressure and document checks |
| Size wording | OD 200mm, DN200, or required ID | Avoids diameter and fitting mismatch |
| Pressure class | SDR, PN or DR, plus working and test pressure if available | Controls wall thickness and system safety |
| Standard | ISO, EN, ASTM, AWWA or local project standard | Affects dimensions, test method and approval documents |
| Fittings | Elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, valves and connection method | The pipe system is only as reliable as its matching components |
| Documents | Datasheet, certificate scope, inspection or approval requirements | Prevents certificate assumptions before shipment |
Where A 200mm HDPE Pipe Is Commonly Reviewed
A 200mm HDPE pipe may be reviewed for potable water branch lines, municipal distribution, irrigation mains, industrial circulation water, temporary mining water lines and some pressure drainage systems. The size can be practical in many projects, but the final suitability depends on flow, pressure, route, standard and fittings.
If potable water is involved, you can also review the HDPE water pipe page and confirm the applicable certificate scope through the certification page. Please do not assume one certificate covers every size, pressure class and fitting.
Technical RFQ Checklist For 200mm HDPE Pipe
- Pipe size: confirm whether you mean 200mm OD, DN200 or required inside diameter.
- Pressure class: send SDR, PN or DR, plus working pressure and test pressure if known.
- Application: tell us whether the line is for water, irrigation, mining, industrial transfer or another system.
- Standard: include ISO, EN, ASTM, AWWA or local project requirements when available.
- Fittings and joining: list elbows, tees, reducers, flange adapters, valves, butt fusion or electrofusion requirements.
- Documents: tell us whether datasheet, certificate scope, inspection or approval files are required.
How This Specification Guide Connects With Price
Once the specification is clear, the next question is usually price. That is a different discussion. Price is affected by SDR, wall thickness, fittings, quantity, packing, freight and documents. If you are already comparing quotations, read the companion article: 200mm HDPE Pipe Price Guide.
The relationship between these two articles is simple: this page helps you define what you need; the price guide helps you compare what suppliers offer. If you skip the specification step, price comparison becomes unreliable.
FAQ
Is 200mm HDPE pipe measured by outside diameter?
In many metric HDPE pressure pipe specifications, 200mm refers to outside diameter. Still, you should confirm OD, DN and ID wording before ordering, especially when the project uses local drawings or tender documents.
Does 200mm HDPE pipe have one fixed wall thickness?
No. Wall thickness changes with SDR or DR. The same 200mm outside diameter can have different inside diameters, pressure classes, material weight and price.
Can I choose 200mm HDPE pipe by PN only?
PN is useful, but it is not enough by itself. You should also confirm SDR or DR, standard, material grade, fittings, test pressure and application.
What should I send to Puhui Industry for a technical check?
Send the pipe size wording, SDR/PN/DR, application, quantity, standard, fittings list, destination country and document requirements. If you only have drawings or a tender file, you can send those first and we can help identify the missing specification points.
Send A Clear Specification Before You Buy
If you are preparing a 200mm HDPE pipe inquiry, send your application, size wording, SDR or PN, standard, quantity, fittings and document requirements to Puhui Industry. A clear specification helps us respond with a useful quotation instead of another list of questions.
